Come and contribute to a large, colourful and vibrant community mosaic that will be displayed at The Old Market for years to come!
The mosaics made will be part of a larger design that will be a “patchwork” of images showing the variety of produce that would have been available to buy and sell in the Regency and early Victorian period, when the building was in its first manifestation as the bustling Brunswick Market.
What will you do: Come together with like-minded people for a collaborative mosaic-making session. Caroline will guide you through the making process, teaching you how to cut and shape ceramic tiles and incorporate recycled materials such as vintage crockery, mirror pieces, buttons and other “found treasures” to make beautiful mosaics. You can create a small mosaic square, add a little bit to a larger design, or help cut the tiles- all contributions are welcome.
Get involved: You are invited to bring in any small pieces of broken crockery or buttons that might be included in the design, especially anything that is from the period, eg have you found any little “sherds” of crockery when gardening or walking on the beach? Do you have an old button box hanging around? If so, bring them along. You will learn how to stick down the materials in the mosaic design.
About the design: The mosaics will range in size from 10 x 10cm to 20 x 20 cm and they will depict images of the types of vegetables, fruit, meat and fish, etc that would have been available to buy back in the days between 1828-39 when the market was operating. The designs are going to be realistic-looking and in keeping with the era (so no bright tropical/ modern foods as they wouldn’t have been available back then).
Why? Mosaic making is mindful, satisfying and fun! You will have the pleasure of contributing to an artwork that will be publicly displayed for years to come. Caroline will share her skills and enthusiasm for this ancient craft. Mosaic making is inclusive and suitable for all ages from 8+, you don’t need any experience (children must be accompanied by an adult). The groups will be small and friendly and it’s free! All materials are paid for by Heritage Lottery Funding.
